EuroSkills medallist Inka created a gown for the Presidential Independence Day Reception

This year, professionals from the education sector have been invited to the Independence Day Reception hosted by the President of the Republic. One of the invitees is Maria Ekroth, Executive Director of Skills Finland. The invitation reflects the appreciation shown for vocational education and training in Finland.

“The invitation is a great honour. It demonstrates that vocational education and high-level expertise are seen as important parts of Finnish society. I am truly delighted about this,” says Maria Ekroth.

“It is clear to me that I also want my attire at the Reception to showcase the excellence of young professionals that Skills Finland promotes. It is wonderful that Inka took on the challenge with confidence and is creating the gown on a tight schedule.”

Classic glamour meets modern design language

Ekroth’s dark red evening gown is made of luxurious, heavily draping silk satin. The gown combines classic glamour, a beautifully flowing fabric and the impressive design language of a young designer. The off-shoulder neckline highlights the shoulder line, and the lightly fitted bodice joins a flowing, full-length hem. While creating the gown, Inka Nurminen has paid particular attention to how the fabric moves and changes in different parts of the garment.

“Making the gown is not only a significant step in my professional growth, but also a sign of the trust that has been placed in me as a person, as a student and as a maker. It highlights the importance of education and what it has given me – skill, courage and wonderful opportunities,” Inka says.

The gown was created with the skill of a European Championship medallist

Inka Nurminen is in her fourth year of studying for a vocational upper secondary qualification in the textile and fashion sector at Koulutuskeskus Salpaus in Lahti. She won a bronze medal in May at Taitaja, the Finnish national championship for professional skills. In September, she received another bronze medal at EuroSkills 2025 together with her pair competitor Elja Saraluoto in the skill Fashion Design and Technology.

“Competitions offer an incredible opportunity to learn new things and gain experience in the field. Competing has given me self-confidence, new experiences and contacts, as well as insights into myself and my skills,” Inka says.

In the future, Inka hopes to study abroad. She also wants to take part in making the clothing industry more environmentally friendly and in promoting body positivity and diversity in the sector, both in Finland and internationally.
